Manxies galore

A walk along Tanybwlch Bay turned up very little apart from at least four juvenile Wheatears and a Hare, so it was off to the castle for a look at the sea.
Pretty quiet out there, but as I was admiring a Peregrine on its customary perch on Constitution Hill I noticed that there were very large numbers of Manx Shearwaters feeding around Sarn Gynfelin, so I decided to go to Borth for a closer look.
I didn't attempt to estimate the numbers of Manxies there. There were none of the large dense rafts that form in late summer, but very large numbers of birds scattered over, and on the sea as far as the eye could see, certainly in the tens of thousands.
Many birds were passing to the south very close inshore, so to get some idea of the numbers involved I did a  sample 20 minute count of these and got 6,700.
There were also good numbers of Gannets. A single scan revealed 240, a few of which were feeding in the sheltered bay at upper Borth, even to the landward side of the new artificial reefs.
To add a little variety, 12 Common Scoter flew past and six Sanderling were on the beach at the turn car park.
Ended up at Ynyslas. Had a quick look for the Rose-coloured Starling without success.
