What an afternoon he had! It started with a male Black Redstart on the pavement and on the adjacent building between the Belle View and Chinese restaurants on the front at Aberystwyth. Up at the National Library there was one, possibly two female Black Redstarts. On the University campus there were several Fieldfares and Blackbirds feeding on berries and some Goldfinches, unusually eating pine cone seeds.
Feeding by the roadside near the crematorium was a Woodcock. From Ynyslas Turn car park Chris felt that there may well have been Long-tailed Ducks and Scaup far offshore. The female Scaup was still on the Leri by the railway bridge and on a meadow behind the boatyard were 8 Pink-footed Geese. On the Leri saltings at Ynyslas were several Redshanks and 8 Knot.
Back at Aberystwyth, just as the light was begining to fail, off South Beach near the harbour were 9 Tufted Ducks and what Chris felt pretty sure was the female Ring-necked Duck. If, as is likely, the Rheidol dam reservoir is frozen, the birds have moved to the nearby sea.
