Very heavy showers but a lone whimbrel(calling fortunately) flying south, over 7 wheatears in varying stages of moult with a small flock of linnets, an odd ringed plover, sand martins at the cliff, young kestrel with mother, buzzard, kite and a flock of assorted wood and feral pigeons.
The farm at Morfa Mawr has fenced off a strip for the coastal path on the cliff top and the adjacent fields are planted with maize. The seaward edge of the crop is lined with a lot of arable 'weeds' which are providing nectar for insects now but will shortly be seeding and thus feeding lots of small passerines. In the wet the white butterflies were grounded but there were very many, mostly green-veined. This is so much better than the previous coastal sheep desert; I only hope the plastic sheeting under the maize will degrade before it blows into Cardigan Bay.
