A DAY AT THE COAST

Harry and I had an early start at Aberystwyth and were rewarded with a good variety of birds (and were joined by Jon Woodruff for a while). A Golden Plover was on College Rocks (on the left in the rather poor photo) and a Kingfisher perched nearby. 2 Sanderling settled on Castle Point Rocks and moved to the beach and joined 31 Ringed Plovers and 7 Turnstones. 4 Sandwich Terns settled on College Rocks and offshore were some Manx Shearwaters and a Razorbill.
At Llanrhystud there were 8 more Ringed Plovers,1 Turnstone and 2 Dunlin. Offshore was a Guillemot and a Fulmar.
At Llansantffraed, now sunny and hot, there were 41 Oystercatchers, including the 'white' one, 7 Turnstones, 6 Ringed Plovers, 1 Dunlin and 26 Cu
rlew. There was an obvious movement of both Sandwich Terns and Pied Wagtails.
Our picnic lunch was enjoyed at Llanon, beside the field where 120 or so Mediterranean Gulls were feeding.
At Aberarth, where there is a comfortable bench by the mouth of the river, there were many gulls and Oystercatchers bathing and preening, including a colour-ringed Herring Gull. (When I get the ringing details I will put them on the blog.). Also, 23 Curlew, 1 Common Sandpiper, at least 3 White Wagtails amongst the many Pied and a couple of Peregrines which flew in together from off the sea.
It was a relaxing day and The last of the Summer Wine is still alive and well in Ceredigion.
