late brood

Well Toffy had to have her late afternoon run today so we went up Cwm Berwyn with the clouds clearing; the forester's cottage ,now empty, had house martins still busy but the swallow shed opposite had the roof removed exposing the nests. A wildlife crime if caught in the act but hey ho, who is to see?
After a run up the forest track we were amazed to see a great tit with caterpillar on a long dead tree stump adjacent to the road. Sure enough there was a brood of nearly ready to fledge youngsters 3 ft down the split trunk which unfortunately could not be photographed even with a torch for light. We don't seem to have second broods of tits as they do in southern England so I think this is notable unless you tell me otherwise!
