group walk at Penlanlas

Well the promised rain didn't turn up but then neither did the birds! Only 23 species albeit including a Peregrine chasing the pipits and linnets over the set-aside. It was small, brown but had the very strongly marked facial pattern which 2 of us managed to see before it disappeared over the hedge. Apart from that the most impressive sight was a large number of ravens (c. 40) amongst other corvids, which were very vocal and active in the brisk wind.
Another 12 species, including a goosander on the river, were seen in the valley bottom where it was more sheltered as evidenced by the 20-30 feeding hirundines.
All agreed this is a good location with good habitats and views which would be far more productive on a sunny day!
