The RSPB has a planning application for a hide on the east bank of the Clettwr near Tre’r Ddol overlooking the main wader breeding fields and wetlands at Lodge Farm. The planning application also includes the creation of a small car-park at the lay-by near Craig Y Penrhyn just off the road between Tre’r ddol and Ynyslas and a footpath from there leading to the bridge at the ford and a footpath to the hide. This is a wonderful area for birdwatching with thousands of waders using the site in the winter months and an increasing number of ducks and in 2010 held 50 pairs of breeding lapwing and 20 pairs of redshank. I would ask any birdwatcher who supports this application to e-mail a message of support for the proposal to Russell.jones@rspb.org.uk and I can then forward these messages of support to the planning department at Ceredigion County Council. Messages of support may well enable the application to be looked upon favourably by the council and the hide will provide a superb facility for both local and visiting birdwatchers. Following the wishes of the late Hywel Roderick a small legacy was left to the RSPB and we would like this legacy to contribute towards the cost of the hide overlooking an area where Hywel wished others to enjoy the birdwatching as much as he did.
