Woke at 5.30 to our resident swallows making a terrific 'alarm call' din, as I feared, I was just in time to see one of our resident magpies coming away from their nest with an egg in its bill. The nest which is in a previously used 'box' was completely trashed.
Over the last 6 years we have eventually encouraged house martins to nest , up to four pairs, though breeding was not so successful last season.
Have not seen a single one anywhere this year, have they had a problem? Or is it just me? (Should have gone to Specsavers, perhaps!)
