Late postings

Here are a couple of late postings. Sorry for the delay, just back from a week's birding in Lesvos -

Barry and I were down by the harbour this morning from 0645-10.00 awaiting the Celtic Challenge boats. The long tailed duck was still there and there were 5 purple sands on the rocks just down from the castle. I also saw a largish tern (Sandwich I presume) fishing just offshore. Great web site by the way – very useful and informative.

A Garden Warbler singing in our garden today. A fortnight later than the average arrival date over last 20 years. A pair of Blackcaps are well settled for the first time in the garden, usually just pass through. Will they tolerate the Garden Warbler? Are they competitive for territories? Similarly we always have Willow Warblers nesting but Chiffchaffs just pass through until this year when Chiffchaffs were well settled until the very late arrival of the Willow Warblers which seem to have taken over. To add to the competition in the garden a pair of Redstarts evicted Blue tits from a nest box but have settled for somewhere else. A late pair of Mistle Thrush have just started to incubate whilst attacking the Jays and Jackkdaws. I should be interested to know what other records there are of interspecies competition.
