I know Coed Dolgoed or Coed y Bont as its now known (community woodland near Pontrhydfendigaid) is a good little wood with diverse habitats but I was shocked this morning to hear the unmistakeable fluting of a Golden Oriole from the canopy of some largish oaks at the top of the wood as I arrived at 06.30, just after a thunderstorm, to collect a moth trap. I stood listening for about 10 minutes and as the bird was within 50 or so metres crept forward to hopefully see it leave the tree but no! I have just returned from France where we were hearing them high in the poplars calling every day as they arrived from the south so it was instantly recognisable and a thrill.
Mike H has drawn my attention to the various records in Hywel's book including one from Pant Y Fedwen not far up the valley from where I was so maybe Cere is on a regular flight path to Suffolk for them?
Anyway, keep an ear out for this wonderful sound!
