Long Wood Community Woodland

Chilly, windy. patchy rain and worse still....leaden skies. But things were lively at Long Wood all the same. For a start, there must have been up to 20 local people working (either paid or as volunteers) on all manner of tasks. I know too that my son, who attends the local primary school, will be spending six whole days this term doing play/learning in the woods. This all seems to be largely for the best I think. The management work undertaken so far does not appear to have affected the bird life in a negative sense as far as I can tell. I counted the following number of singing males this morning; Blackcap 20, Chiffchaff 17, Willow Warbler 22, Garden Warbler 5, Wood Warbler 10, Pied Flycatcher 5, Spotted Flycatcher 1 pair. Flicking back through my notes I see that the counts for Blackcap and Wood Warbler were records for me personally at this site.
