Ian Harrison has pointed out that the most likely explanation for the appearance of a drake Mandarin at the same site which has recently held a female is that the bird was a drake all along, in eclipse plumage.
I must admit that when I saw it in early august, I assumed it was a female.
If anyone has any photographs of the bird, why not have a good look at them and see what you think.
