Yellow Browed warblerS!

A very chilly morning at Coed Y Bont saw Tony Cross, Andre Marsh and Mark Cutts setting up mistnets to continue the bird surveys in the Community woodland project at Coed Y Bont or Coed Dolgoed as it was called.
They worked through 58 birds of 14 species before finally attracting the attention of 2 YBW's!
Andre found one last year and one this, so was delighted to catch two in the net.
There were 5 retraps from birds ringed last year .
It was a brilliant opportunity to study common birds at close quarters and learn how they are aged and sexed.  In the bags were 12 Redwing all showing the heavily streaked thighs of the Icelandic race and some the small pale mark on the tertials indicating juvenile status.
The largest bird was a young female Sparrowhawk ( note the spots on the breast not quite barred) which had been attracted by the bird calls!
The smallest: 10 Goldcrests all but one juveniles.
