Whilst Mr Dobbins was on Cardigan island we were nearby, just south of Aberporth MOD headland enjoying close views of a male Yellowhammer. Some reading revealed that they were once here in such numbers as to make it a veritable stronghold of the once common hedgerow bird. Fortunately there is still arable farming in the adjacent fields (though whether modern grain collectors leave any seed at all is doubtful) and a thick scrub area for shelter so a return visit might produce evidence of breeding.
Those arable fields were providing plentiful food for a lone Whimbrel and a couple of dozen Herring Gulls whilst the hedges and scrub in a ravine were housing numerous churring Whitethroats and chiffing chiffies.
On Tuesday evening we enjoyed at least 6 screaming Swifts visiting a converted chapel in Aberporth.
On Saturday 11th a group of around 20 passed overhead during a visit to Henllan.
