The Ring-necked Duck remains

Finally caught up with the male ring necked duck on Llyn Blaenmelindwr.  The bird was close in with three tufted (two male, one female).  A very nice individual, though it escapes me why this species is called ring necked duck, when its most obvious features are associated with the bill and flanks.  One female goosander on same lake.  Crossbill singing from nearby small pines.  Further down road in forestry above Penrhyncoch, were further crossbill chipping and a large mixed flock (c. 120 birds) of siskin and goldfinch.
