I was watching a red kite yesterday afternoon over Penbontrhydybeddau to see if it would lead me to its nest site. It was soaring and floating around above the valley, probably hunting, covering an area of perhaps a square mile. About 25 minutes later it disappeared over the Banc-y-darren ridge and during that time it had beaten its wings fourteen times - and half of those were to avoid a high voltage cable. What a supreme example of the red kite's mastery of the air!
