Hight tide at Ynys-hir
Roy Bamford and I took ourselves off to the Breakwater Hide at Ynys-hir for the high tide this morning. After a while we were joined by Russell. Amongst the birds seen were 5 Bar-tailed Godwit, 3 Greenshank, 1 Ruff, about 10 Wigeon and 4 or 5 Pintail. There were lots of Swallows feeding over the saltings in front of the hide and from time to time groups of small waders passed up and down the estuary. Russell managed to identify a couple of them as Curlew Sandpipers. Flocks of Curlew, perhaps 50 or 60 of them, got up into the air and at least 1 Whimbrel was heard but not seen. In case you're thinking of going in the near future, avoid the footpath that goes to the Breakwater Hide along beside the sea wall/railway track. It is very wet.
