The weather on Sunday encouraged me out into the garden to clear leaves dispersed by the blackbirds, remove last years hellibore leaves to help the new buds grow and cut back a little of the trailing ivy before the nesting starts.
Around about 3-30m I was delighted to hear almost above my head the call of a female tawny owl.I looked around but failed to see it so assumed it must have been well hidden in the Fir tree, which possibly helped it to survive such extrem temperatures in December. Now we need to hear the male calling and then we can perhaps look forward to another family of tawnies. They did breed successfully on the flood plain last year but not in the lane .
