Between 3 and 3:30 this afternoon Jill Feely and I watched a Short-eared owl hunting around the Marian Mawr pools. From the hide we had superb views of it in flight and several unsuccessful plunges to earth before a successful catch not far from the up-turned rowing boat. It stayed on the ground for a while, presumably eating its kill, before perching on the boat for a short time and then continued hunting including perching on a fence post giving us more excellent views. This is the first time I have seen this beautiful bird, what a treat.
