Gull surprises

Popped over to Rhos Glyn yr Helyg NR this morning, a reserve about 5miles from Lampeter, to check the butterfly situation in between rain deluges. On the way down the long track there is a pool on which there was a Little Grebe with young. This prompted me to check the more well known pool next to the B4337 in Gorsgoch village, just 600m from the first. Another Grebe here. Whether part of a pair from the other pool or part of a different pair I couldn't tell. The most obvious birds here were the Black-headed Gulls, about 100. At point blank range what a noise! Many were diving into a growth of Mare's tail on the pool and disappearing and I noticed a creamy brown juvenile and a fluffy brown nestling scuttling for cover indicating that at least some of the Gulls are breeding. A handful were settled on the water and a quick scan yielded an adult Mediterranean Gull in full breeding plumage along with what looked like a first winter bird.
