Arrived at the beach car park at Llanrhystud at 7:30 this morning hoping that the rising tide would bring something.
Quite a few Ringed Plover and Dunlin on the beach and it looked quite busy around the lime kilns area so I set off in that direction.
Approaching the flooded field I noticed two small waders quietly probing in the mud and was delighted to find they were juvenile Little Ringed Plovers.
Back to the shore, and to cut a long story short, ended up with counts of ca55 Ringed Plover, 8 Sanderling, 23 Dunlin, 6 Whimbrel, 13 Curlew, 47 Redshank, 3 Common Sandpipers and 7 Turnstone.
As I was watching the LRPs a flock of around 300 gulls flew overhead to the north. Looking through them it was apparent that a majority were Meds, with some Black-headed and a few Herring. They continued until out of sight past the caravan site so I decided not to go looking for them.
However, as I was walking back, small parties of Med Gulls began to fly back over the bay from the direction of the caravan site, around 70 in total, and as I arrived at the car park a flock of gulls landed on the sea. Looking through them produced a count of 62 Med Gulls plus a few Black-headed.
So, for all you Mediterranean Gull enthusiasts out there, why not have a good look at this stretch of the coast and see if you can come up with a really good count.
