Cuckoo news
From the Sankuru Nature Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lloyd moved 305km (189 miles) to an area of closed-canopy forest in the heart of the Congo basin, remaining here from the 19-22 March. However, a single unconfirmed location received on 25 March suggested that he had moved north a further 450km (280 miles) since then, locating him about 100km (60 miles) south of the border with the Central African Republic. There were no further locations because the charge on his tag was very low, presumably due to him having spent time under the forest canopy, but we hope to have an update on his location soon. When he next transmits, will he have left the Democratic of Congo? Stop Press! : as of this afternoon, we have just received a good quality transmission which shows a new location for Lloyd, 1,000km (600 miles) west of the previous location, in Central region of Cameroon! Check the maps tomorrow, when this latest position will be updated.
Lloyd was tagged on Cors Caron last year and is named after John Lloyd from Carmarthen who has been Mr BTO in Wales for many years as a volunteer.
More news on all the cuckoos tagged is available on the BTO website where you can also find the google earth maps and zoom in on the birds' habitat. Lloyd may well be glad to have left the Congo given the latest political news! Follow his journey north.
