Our Golden Opportunity

It looks like Eddie has become a hot topic.  Andre writes.....

The CCW looked in to a possible reintroduction for Golden & White Tailed Eagles in to Wales in 2005. I hope the link below works! It's a 31 page report (pdf) by Mick Marquiss.

I reported seeing the golden eagle to Russell Jones 21 March 2010 when it first appeared over a farm in the upper Teifi valley. The next day I am sure there were 2 birds circling with a buzzard extremely high up and I know two other people who also thought they saw 2 that same week. It stayed around the valleys around Strata Florida for two years and also used to sit on the rocks near the 'trig point' over looking Pontrhydfendigaid village. It was also regularly being seen at Claerwen reservoir as I know the people living at Claerwen Farm (Is that in Radnorshire?). It also entertained people at Pontrhydygroes for a few weeks and the TV people got on to it; the local Miners Arms did a roaring trade. The past year it has mainly been around the Cors Caron entrance, but it is still being seen at the Strata Florida Abbey too.

We don't know if it's an escapee or come over from Ireland and we think it's a male because of its size, I have seen it sky diving a few times. I've lost count of the times that I have seen our eagle, but I still go looking for it and never tire of seeing it. I've got friends back in England who are always asking about it, ''Is it still with us''? they ask. Everyone wants to see our golden eagle.

One day our 'Eddie' will be gone and that would be an incredibly sad day. Why can't someone do something? I know there must be some big names in the bird world who know about this bird and could help it find it a mate? This golden eagle has been living wild for over 3 years (if it was an escapee) and doing well in our remote, rugged landscape. Can we afford to let this 'Golden' opportunity slip by? We took these birds out of our landscape through persecution and probable habitat change, it is only right that we should put them back. 'Golden eagles breeding in Wales again' - now wouldn't that be a fantastic story and a massive boost to the local economy.
