On Wed 25th Feb, I did my section of the Beached Bird Survey for the RSPB, walking along the strand line from Ynyslas Turn to the North end of Borth, a distance of 2.3km. Usually I collect no more than 2 or 3 dead birds and for the last 2 or 3 years there have been none. This year there were 7 guillemots, 7 razorbills, 3 herring gulls, one kittiwake, and one little awk. the auks had good quality plumage but they were skinny and their bellies were slack and flat. I assume that they starved to death.
