Thoughts about Starlings

Starlings pass over my house in Llangybi in small numbers apparently heading to the roost at Talgarreg. Somewhere between Llangybi and Swyddffynnon there must be a sort of transition zone perhaps with some birds heading to one roost yet not far away others heading in the opposite direction. I work at Horeb, Llandysul, and sometimes see flocks of Starlings in the morning that seem to have recently left the Talgarreg roost. A couple of weeks ago a particularly large wave swept over as we were out in the yard loading the mail into the vans. Half a mile long, 300m deep, it must have contained thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of birds. Instinctively, I turned around to share this life affirming experience with my awe struck colleagues but alas, they were utterly oblivious! This morning, a singing Yellowhammer in Cwm Brefi, plus a Kestrel. At Coed Dolgoed,(Bont),a pair of Marsh Tits, a Woodcock and a Dipper on the river near the car park.
