At 6 this evening a fine male Harrier ( some brown still showing) flew south and went down on the bog which looked splendid in the late sun. A few minutes later small skeins of greylag flew in to form a flock of around 70-80 calling loudly and jinking about the sky before settling on the SW bog.
The scene was completed by 7 snipe and 20 meadow pipits all calling as they too went down to roost. At the waiting room some teal had already got their heads down.
If you haven't seen the molinia on the bog at this time of year its definitely worth a visit at dawn bathed in dewy cobwebs or in a sunset. No wonder it was called the 'red bog'.
