Brief visit

A few days down in Ceredigion is always exciting and these last couple of days have produced some good birds. Friday saw brief views of The Cross Inn Great Grey Shrike, a fine male Hen Harrier and a female Merlin darting through. Later in the day three Med Gulls and a two White Wags were at Llanrhystyd.
Saturday saw a nice Osprey fly in from the south at Tan y Bwlch beach and circling Pendinas before continuing north. A female Eider flew north of Morfa Bychan late in the evening.
A walk around Ynys Hir this morning was livened up by a noisy Cetti's Warbler which showed well around the screen on the way to the breakwater hide. A fine female Hen Harrier quartered the fields and two Otters were a joy to watch. I'd never heard them call before so this was a real highlight.
This evening, at Llanrhystyd, as the rain came in I managed to find Arfon's Iceland Gull in the fields to the east of the village with 200+ large gulls. It seemed to fly back to the coast so I headed back to the beach car park. A scan offshore picked up the superb Great Northern Diver, just offshore from the point. 5 Med Gulls and 8 White Wagtails here too. Still a couple of days of my short break left so hopefully time for a few migrants yet.
