There was a cold wind whistling down the estuary when I arrived at Ynyslas this morning. The tide was still rising and upriver I could see a large flock of godwits.
Much closer were the usual small waders: I did rough counts of 120 Ringed Plover and 130 Dunlin, plus three Sanderling.
Luckily the tide was pushing the godwits towards me, and eventually they settled, enabling a count of 105 Bar-tailed , accompanied by two Knot.
Later, after a visit to Glandwr, a mixed flock of Bar-tailed Godwits and Whimbrel flew onto the fields on the right of the road from Ynyslas turn to Llancynfelyn, just after the railway level crossing. These two species often flock together on spring passage and this flock contained 24 Barwits and 72 Whimbrel.
