Hirundines

Sue's House Martins reminded me that I've seen very few so far this spring. (spring!).  Over the past couple of weeks I've seen a lot of Swallows and quite a few Sand Martins moving north, and this morning good numbers of those species along the Teifi at Pont Einon, and Sand Martins feeding over Maesllyn, but no H Martins.
John and I were talking yesterday during the snowstorm and wondering:
a) what are they feeding on?
b) why do they bother coming back, passing over insect-rich southern Europe on the way?  We decided it must be ancestral.
Looking out at the driving rain, I'm still wondering.
