Ynys-hir

A morning on the RSPB reserve with Paul Bennett.  Just before the Marian Mawr pools a Great White Egret flew over from the direction of the Meirionydd Saltings.
From the hide Paul picked out a Lesser Whitethroat.  Very little on the pools though a juv Shelduck had joined the Teal.
Over at the Domen Las hide a Common Seal was on the bank, a Common Sandpiper dropped in and we were treated to flypasts from a juv Marsh Harrier and a Peregrine.
Back at the Marian Mawr a single Osprey was visible up the valley and a Whimbrel called frequently, though we couldn't find it.

When I posted the above account on the blog yesterday I described the seal as a Grey Seal.  This is the species which is commonly found around Cardigan Bay.
Today I have been informed by Jay at the Marine Wildlife Centre in New Quay that the animal is almost certainly a Common Seal.  Jay tells me that when Common Seals do turn up around here they are usually not too healthy.
