From the Ynys Feurig Hide the pools and surrounding grassland were so flooded with the recent rain that there were no muddy margins, so I couldn't find any small waders. Curlews were pouring in on the rising tide; my final count was 480, plus ca60 Lapwings. Masses of ducks, too active and flighty to count, but including good numbers of Wigeon and Pintail and a couple of Shoveler among the Mallard and Teal.
A Great White Egret was also present, a group of five Greenshank were roosting just the other side of the railway and a Wheatear worked its way along the track.
At the other end of the reserve, pick of the birds were 10 Bar-tailed Godwits and a Kestrel and the Barnacle Geese were accompanied by a Red-breasted Goose.
