Red Kites and dragonflies

On an early morning walk this morning I was watching a loose group of about 7 red kites playing around on the north side of the valley near Salem.

One bird was carrying an object of some sort. It dropped the object, then spiralled down to catch it in mid-air. It repeated this five times, before letting it go on the seventh.

In non-bird related news, we had a big hatch of broad-bodied chasers from our garden pond over the weekend - there must have been at least twenty-five. Some didn't get away before the cold weather set in (and are still there), and there is a new one trying to emerge this morning.
