I have been down down to Salem several times recently to try to get to
grips with the red kite roost. To say it is confusing is an understatement!
Birds using different trees and different areas of woodland, going in and
leaving again. However I've had counts of 56 (2nd Jan) and 58 (5th Jan) birds on
two evenings, which is kind of reassuring, and gives an idea of how many
individuals might be there.
On the 2nd four stock doves flew out of the same general area, the first I
have seen for months. On 6th I could see three swans in flight about a mile
distant above the farm reservoir at Penycefn (towards Penrhyncoch). They could
have been whoopers.
