Ynys-hir, Ynyslas and more

Me and Jude Barbour headed out early yesterday morning to try and see the Greenland White-fronted geese at Ynys-hir. We headed to Ynys feurig hide and on arrival noticed the flock of white-fronts amongst the Canada’s. We counted 27, but after a message from Tom Kistruck explaining there may be some Russian white-fronts in the flock, I looked back at my photos and there appears to be 3 or 4 Russian white-fronts amongst the Greenlands. Other highlights from Ynys hir included a fly over pink footed goose which we then relocated on Marian mawr pools and then again on the saltmarsh. Along with a Marsh harrier, 5 bar-tailed godwit, 189 curlew, drake red-breasted merganser, 3 goldeneye, 2 green sandpipers and c5 gadwall.

After success at Ynys-hir we headed to ynyslas where we saw 6 pale-bellied brents, a female goldeneye, 3 red-breasted merganser and a female merlin. We continued through the day adding amongst others - tufted duck at Nant yr Arian, a 2nd winter med gull in Aberystwyth harbour and a Chough at tanybwlch which took our total up to 86 species for the day.
