Aberporth Friday 1st July

A few Manxies offshore, first I've seen this breeding season and a few auks floating about.  One Oystercatcher pair lost their chicks but appear to be sitting again high on the cliff;  the other two pairs have each lost a pair of chicks already without any bad storms.

At the Chapel carpark I only saw 2 Swifts entering nestholes, 4 pairs last year and very few Martins including just one pair nesting on the cliffs with various nest sites unoccupied on the houses near the car park.

Sparrows are in our swift box and stuffing straw on top of the artificial H Martin cups but no young seen yet.

At Treflyn Tregaron only 2 Spotted Fly chicks have left the nest. They always breed twice so am hoping the next lot will be a full brood.

Near Oakwood on Thursday there was a kite struggling to carry off a squashed squirrel which it had to drop. I turned around and returned to see it was again struggling to get enough lift to clear the hedge so dropped it .  I lobbed the little beast into a cut field as I envisaged a kite RTA.

Mike Hayward told me there are 3 kestrel boxes with 16 chicks between them in the north of the County so that's some good news though not for any curlew chicks!
