Cwm Berwyn

A few days ago we finally saw the Ring Ouzels in the Elan valley in Powys, having tried and failed each autumn for the past few years.  Appetite whetted for more our next trip up to Nant-y-Moch was enlivened by the possibility of a Ceredigion one, but despite several promising flocks of Fieldfares and Redwings on the berries there were no Ouzels.

So, of course the news and grid reference for one near Tregaron was very interesting. The directions were spot on and there he was, accompanied by c.20 Fieldfares, in the top of the Rowan.  Twenty minutes of good views and a few pictures later we pushed on to Soar y Mynydd. Coming back a couple of hours later we paused to get another Ouzel fix but the Rowan was empty of birds save for a large female Sparrowhawk. Although this was promptly chased away by 3 crows the Rowan was left looking very deserted and the churr and clack of winter thrushes could not be heard…..
