ABERYSTWYTH, LLANRHYSTUD, LLANSANTFFRAED and TRISANT

This morning at Aberystwyth there were 13 Purple Sandpipers on the rocks by the wooden jetty.
The first photo shows how little these birds move during quite a prolonged high tide roost period!
Birds from Norway and beyond have shorter bills than those from Iceland and Canada. The second photo, like Kev's, shows a bill which must belong to a longer-billed sub-species. The Iceland birds apparently do not fly south for the winter. Birds from Canada leap-frog over them and come to western Britain, so our Aberystwyth birds are possibly very long-distance migrants!

We moved on to Llanrhystud where there were 23 Grey Plovers roosting on the pebbles.
A Grey Seal cruised along the water's edge and after much splashing appeared with a huge, silvery fish. It then swam further out to devour its meal.
At Llansantffraed there was an adult Mediterranean Gull.
No Whooper Swans were on Blaenmelindwr first thing, but we did see two on the little lake by the church to the south of Llyn Frongoch at Trisant. A pair of Goldeneye were on Frongoch.
