SAND MARTINS and GREAT CRESTED GREBES

Bob accompanied me on two special trips yesterday. The first was to check on the Sand Martin colony in the Rheidol valley, upstream of Capel Bangor. With the kind permission of the owners of the Rheidol Riding School we had a good view of the river bank where, this year 90 possible nest holes could be seen. Just over 20 clearly had young inside with adults busy taking in food and removing droppings. As it is a bit early, other nest holes may have been occupied with incubating birds. So, must do another check later on.
Afterwards I showed Bob some of the lakes at Trisant, where once again a pair of Great Crested Grebes have young, with the possibility of a second breeding pair. Why do they not appear to breed successfully elsewhere in Ceredigion?
