With Richard banished to Portland for the weekend it has fallen to me to let you know how our first Constant Effort Scheme (CES) ringing session went at the Teifi Marshes reserve yesterday. Similar to last year the season started with a bang as our first visit coincided with a fall of sedge warblers with 71 ringed out of total of 104 new birds, which included a smattering of blackcaps, whitethroats and garden warblers.. The real star of the day though was a French ringed reed warbler. A further 13 returning reed warblers (ringed in previous years) were also trapped.
Bird news from elsewhere included a pr of Little Ringed Plovers at Ty Gwyn and loads of swifts at Tregaron Bog, which also had a couple of Whimbrel and 6 'Greenland' Wheatears.
