gull studies

South of the south beach carpark at Llanon were a large number of gulls in the field with newly cut hay bales and on the shore. Good opportunity to study plumages and structure but for the strong on-shore wind which was a challenge for the ultra-light tripod and Bri's Tilley hat which blew into the blackthorn scrub and disappeared! As this is the hat that can be ingested by elephants and survive we fully expect to collect it from the bushes sometime over the winter.
At sea. 00's of manxies (tho' how you count them when they are going round in circles mystifies me) gannets, fulmars, kittiwakes, great black, lesser black, herring, black headed, common and med gulls. Juveniles of the last four species were on close display on the shore and were joined by 9 shelduck and a few curlew. Alas none of the wader numbers being seen at Ynys Las,just 2 ringed plovers.
Also on the shore Rod Penrose picking up a couple of rotting porpoises.
