CROSSBILLS
Surprisingly, there were no birds of interest over the stormy sea off South beach at Aberystwyth. Llanrhystud was also quiet, so Bob and I headed inland to Cross Inn Forest. 4 Reed Buntings and 4 Crossbills were the only birds to be seen. The Crossbills, 3 males and a female were feeding on ash seeds and nowhere in any of the literature can I find reference to Crossbills taking seeds from anything other than conifers. There were plenty of cones on the nearby spruce and larches.
