The joy of birding

I was delighted that David finally tracked down the Starling roost. Must get over there soon one evening. That's what I love about birding in Ceredigion. There always seems to be new things to discover and gaps in our knowledge to be filled. Likewise, new paths to be trodden, new views to enjoy, new mountain streams to accidentally fall in. This morning I did a circuit starting at Llanddewi Brefi, across to Cwm Carfan, down to Abercarfan and back past Pant pool. There were 4 Woodcocks and 50 Fieldfares in Cwm Carfan. A Goosander was on the Teifi at Abercarfan. In the fields nearby was a Green Sandpiper. This is the fourth different location that I've seen them though never more than a single bird on a single day. I wonder how many there might be wintering in this area? 5 Little Grebes were on the pool and a Kingfisher was in the swampy area adjacent to the pool.
Can't get that twitchers programme out of my mind. I realised years ago that I'd never have the skillls, the knowledge, the oodles of cash needed to be a serious twitcher. But it's more than that. I lack the single minded determination. Like many people who voted Liberal Democrat in the last general election perhaps I'm just too willing to compromise. I mean just the other Sunday I awoke with every intention of undertaking a gruelling 15 hour journey to a remote Scottish Isle to tick off a mega or too, fuelled only by cans of high energy drink and endless bags of hula hoops. But when Mrs M. mentioned she was cooking home made pumpkin soup for lunch I thought I'd just pop over to Cors Caron instead. I knew I'd let myself down badly again but I just couldn't help it.
