Announcement

I’m thrilled to be able to announce that swallows are nesting in our shed. Oh joy!

They have had a rather chequered history over the last few years, with several mystery disappearances. Last year they turned up on May 19th but had gone again three days later.

This year they arrived last weekend while we were on Skokholm, so within a day of last year. Over the next few days they lined the old nest with feathers and then the eggs began to appear .

The birds have often been absent for long periods of time, but I believe incubation has started today.

Would they normally not incubate till the clutch is complete?

One has to wonder if it is the same bird(s) as previous years or whether swallows scour the countryside looking for suitable empty nesting sites.

Does anyone have information on this type of thing?
