Having decided to watch the incoming very high tide from the Saltings hide, I was making my way down there when, having paused to try for lesser pecker at the spot where I had failed a couple of days ago, I was greeted by a man sitting under a tree.
He had arrived very early in the morning and had been successful with the pecker. I told him where I was going and we agreed to join forces.
As we got chatting we realised we had met before. Five years ago, on a fine April morning as I was seawatching from Aberystwyth castle, he happened along and told me that he was cycling round Britain in an attempt to see as many birds as possible. He joined me on the bench and we managed to add Manx Shearwater to his list.
To cut a long story short, Gary Prescott, aka the Biking Birder, is doing it again. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours in the Saltings hide, though nothing unusual came up on the tide. Three Bar-tailed Godwits and about 30 Dunlin were probably the highlights, though we had great views of the usual wildfowl and waders.
You can read about Gary's progress on Facebook and his blog: just type in biking birder.
