Cwm Brefi

A Yellowhammer was still present above Pentre Rhew and a Grasshopper Warbler was not far away in a wet area at the edge of a felled plantation. Three more Hammers were in Cwm Brefi. A Cuckoo was calling quite close to the village and much later the same or another was calling at the top of the valley, where there was also a Spotted Flycatcher. Overall, there seemed to be more Whinchats about than last year. I counted 11 males in total. Back at home a juvenile Robin had got stuck in the wooden porch thingy on the front of our house. It took a while to catch it as it fluttered about among the clutter of wellies, football boots, tools, potatoes etc. When I finally caught it, it was smothered in heaps of old webs, and looked like it had been trapped by one of those bird eating tarantulas that you see on Steve Backshall programmes. Of course, it was simply the victim of an absence of vacuum cleaning.
