HWR SUMMARY FOR JULY

HIGHLIGHTS: Last month’s King Eider relocated to Ynyslas (4th onwards) and was initially found there by Harry Pepper. A Black Guillemot reported by Lyndon Lomax was unusual in New Quay harbour (3rd) as was a Puffin off Cardigan Island (11th) reported by Richard Dobbins and a Common Rosefinch seen by Dave Cunniffe in Cross Inn Forest (13th). A Temminck’s Stint was found by Liz Snell at Llanon (16th) and a Red-rumped Swallow briefly settled on garden furniture in Mervyn Lloyd’s garden at Eglwys Fach (19th). He must have thought he was back on Lesvos!
YNYSLAS:  Waders included 235 Dunlin, 15 Whimbrel, 40 Sanderling (22nd), two Greenshank (25th) and 118 Ringed Plovers (31st). Also there: a Yellow-legged Gull (18th), a Yellow Wagtail and a Ring-billed Gull (22nd), 3000 Manx Shearwaters and 90 Gannets (25th) and an Arctic Skua (28th). A Marsh Harrier frequented the Dyfi estuary (from 22nd). Thanks to Edward O’Connor for many of the Ynyslas sightings.

OTHER SITES: 12 Common Sandpipers and a Little Ringed Plover were at RSPB Ynys-hir (4th), one Green and five Common Sandpipers were at the Clettwr (8th), a Little Ringed Plover and two Common Sandpipers at Cors Caron (16th), 555 Mediterranean Gulls (23rd) and an Arctic Skua (31st) were at Llanon.
