Highlights of a visit to Cross Inn forest yesterday afternoon were
a willow tit, and a drumming great spotted woodpecker (heard and then seen – I
wanted to check it wasn’t just a creaking tree!) - this seems very early?

It is very early. They usually drum from January onwards. I don't know for sure, but it could be for the same reason why some birds sing on calm sunny days in winter, Confused?
