Tregaron rookery

The rookery opposite Tregaron school which Ian mentioned the other day is still there and very active, with around 14 nests in trees in the garden of my house, and as many or more in the trees along the river towards the town centre. The number of trees available for nests has, however been reduced over the last years as two properties have had the trees at the back of their gardens felled, and more felling might be on the cards if and when the old school building will be sold and developed. They are a very noisy bunch but so interesting to watch, with a surprising variety of sounds. One year we found a fledgling on the ground and read that the parents would only give it attention if it was up a bush or tree. It was transferred to the highest reachable branch and over the course of the day we watched in amazement as it climbed and fluttered its way to the top.
