A lot of sand but few martins

Liz and myself went to the Cardigan sand quarry last Saturday (1st April) to check for Sand Martins and a possible Wheatear. No luck with the latter and only four Sand Martins seen flying around, with the sand cliff that contained the nest holes having fallen victim to the quarry's workings, and no other suitable place available it seems. Also no sign of any Shelducks or Little Grebes that had made use of the puddles and ponds in the quarry site in past years.
