We live right beside
Frongoch lake & the Whooper swans have been here most of the winter. There were
seven while it was very cold but four flew away early spring leaving a pair with
a youngster. Something or someone killed one of them a few weeks ago - feathers
and sinews were on the road up by the church. The other two have stayed on
Frongoch until the fishing season opened. They stuck it out for a few days,
disappearing off to Rhosrhydd and elsewhere during the day but coming home at
night. However, the last few days there have been too many boats reaching into
the furthest edges of the lake as well as several fishermen on foot so I suspect
we will have lost them.
When I
was a child living here, the lake was full of coots, moorhens and grebes but
since the water level has been raised so much by the angling club they have all
disappeared so it's mostly geese plus a few dabchicks & ducks - I struggle
with identifying ducks!!
On 27 March Rhosrhydd had five Greylags, two Canada as well as the two Whoopers.
